What is it?
This started off as a student-led initiative where we discuss a chosen news story in depth using PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) analysis every week through zoom. Given that the majority of our members are aspiring solicitors, we have diversified the content that we offer to cover collaboration events with law firms or Q&A sessions with legal professionals.
Why was it founded?
I founded this organization as I had a vision of creating a community of like minded students, graduates or career changers to come together and share their ideas. This is a safe space for people to share their commercial knowledge or take on news stories. From my own experience, I found that discussing topics with your peers not only improves your advocacy but also your confidence in talking about commercial matters. The informal setting of our weekly meetings allows deeper discussions to take place and eliminates a fear of being wrong. At The News Club, we believe you need to be open to ‘getting it wrong’ to ‘get it right’. I hope you embark with us on our journey towards enhancing our commercial awareness and professional development together.
The News Club History
During 2020 when the club was founded, we initially started off as a small group of three discussing news stories and its impacts on law firms. Ever since, our members have grown immensely. We have over 90 members on WhatsApp, over 130 on LinkedIn and over 110 on Instagram.
Who can join?
We are very open for anyone to become a ‘The News Club’ member as long as you have a genuine interest in discussing the news and in analysing its implications on corporations.
How can I become a member?
You can join our WhatsApp group as weekly meeting links will be sent here. You can also follow our Instagram to watch our daily news briefing stories or our lives with guests in the commercial sector. Lastly, you can keep up to date with the news stories we have discussed or will discuss in the coming weeks through our LinkedIn.
